Special Saturday:

Daddy Yankee: Con Calma Pa’l Choli Concert

Friday, December 6, 2019: Daddy Yankee had his second concert in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico for his new Con Calma tour. Making history as the second performance he has ever produced in the prestigious “Choliseo” in over a decade. The Choli is an iconic location in which both local and international artists best expose themselves in Puerto Rico: it is Puerto Rico’s Madison Square Garden, Tokyo Dome, Wembley Stadium…

I have the privilege of being Puerto Rican, of living in Puerto Rico and of assisting this concert and witnessing the talent and hard-work presented to the fans not only by Daddy Yankee but also by his staff, his dancers and his invited aritists or “special guests” (or artistic friends).

I have always been aware of the talent Daddy Yankee has, his passion for his work, his desire to unite people with music and his love for his motherland. However, being there, physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally, opened my eyes to the amazing vibe this man has, this crew has. The energy among the crowd was insane but adding that to the energy of his dancers and of The Big Boss himself in every second spent on that stage created a new level of exhilarating adrenaline rush. The crowd sang its heart out to every song; every space the “DJ” and Daddy Yankee left silent to hear the crowd was never silent for more than a millisecond before the crowd took over in pure joy.

Most of the public consisted of mature adults, considering Daddy Yankee’s long career shaped previous generations’ teenage years, but there were also preteens, teenagers and young adults among them and it proves Daddy Yankee also unites fans of all ages. With only love for music, there are no boundaries or limits to how many people can join in the celebration of it. Including the nostalgia of the adults to the memories of listening to the classic songs of his career and mixing it with the curiosity and the thrill of the younger generations who are now witnessing a concert given by one of Puerto Rico’s many successful artists coming back home, we get an unforgettable experience for both the crowd and Daddy Yankee, who is most definitely aware of the great range of people his music has reached throughout the last few years.

His concert lasted three full hours. Three hours full of exciting visual aids on the stage, beautiful set designs, incredible stages, amazing music production and quality, fashionable styling on Daddy Yankee and his dancers, incredible choreography, surprise guest appearances and heart-warming speeches. Ranging from classics such as Rompe, Lo Que Pasó, Pasó and Gasolina to modern hits such as Dura, China and Despacito, the concert was flooded with constant beat changes and seamless transitions from hit to hit.

Every second spent on that concert was worth it, every second of it was fun and exciting and remarkable and positive. No accidents, no fights, no abrupt stops, no incidents… For a second, you could forget you were even on Earth. A three-hour long concert full of throwbacks and great professionals, full of happiness and peace, of good memories surrounded by good people. An unforgettable night focused on an unforgettable artist.

No, even better. In his own words…

Daddy Yankee is not a singer… It’s a movement.
